The Brownsville Heritage Complex in historic downtown Brownsville
invites the public to view the exhibit El Arte de los Bendiciones de
Palmas: The Art of the Blessings of the Palms.
The exhibit will be on view in the Stillman House Apartment at the
Brownsville Heritage Complex from March 20 to April 20, 2007 during
regular museum hours. Cost to view the exhibit is included in the price
of admission.
This exhibition was donated by Junita Ginn and is part of the
Brownsville Historical Association's permanent collection. The
collection of religious artifacts made of palm and wheat are associated
with Semana Santa (Mexican Holy Week).
Semana Santa begins on Palm Sunday when holy congregations join in a
special mass, which includes the blessing of palm fronds, or crosses,
and other figures fashioned from palms or other organic materials.
In the past, traditional Mexican and Mexican-American families made
crosses out of the blessed palms and placed them above or behind a door
to keep out evil spirits. Some of the blessed palms are later burned and
the ashes reserved by the church for marking the sign of the cross on
the foreheads of communicants during Ash Wednesday services the
following year. http://www.brownsvillehistory.org

A fund-raising art exhibition will be hosted at The Loft, located at 501
W. Business 83, from March 22-May 7, 2007, with an opening reception
March 22nd at 6:00 p.m.
“Clark Art for Habitat”, is a colorful exhibit with new, never before
seen art work that Kirk Clark, and fellow artist and daughter, Anne
Clark-Lawson have just produced. Both artists have used a wide range of
subjects to create sculpture, monoprints and drawings. Over 65
contemporary works will be available for purchase with all proceeds
benefiting Rio Grande Habitat for Humanity. “The idea is to highlight
Habitat for Humanity, and really showcase all that this organization
does for the people of the Rio Grande Valley,” said Kirk.
Rio Grande Habitat for Humanity, 412 W. Ash Avenue, located across from
the Loft, is a Christian non-profit organization that builds homes for
people that need a hand up, not a hand out. Rio Grande Habitat for
Humanity is dedicated to the ideal that people deserve a decent place to
live and are dedicated to making family partners into responsible
homeowners. Rio Grande Habitat for Humanity will have an open house and
conduct volunteer-guided tours of the facility that evening.
“Clark Art for Habitat” is an idea born of local artist and
philanthropist, Kirk Clark. Kirk is trying to mirror a fund-raising
exhibit that he recently had in Cuidad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Over $25,000 dollars was raised opening night through the sale of Kirk’s
art benefiting a charity organization called Centro de Rehabilitación y
Educación Especial, or CREE, a center for rehabilitation and special
education for underprivileged children.

Coordinator, at deanna@kdeanna@kirkclark.com, or Jack Tierney, Executive

South Texas College’s 12th Annual Student Art Exhibition launched this
month and will be open through Thursday, April 19, 2007. The exhibition
allows students taking studio art courses at the college during the fall
2006 and spring 2007 semesters to show off their artistic talent and
point of view.
“Some instructors required their students to submit work as part of
their course completion,” said Richard Lubben, chair of the
Communications and Creative Arts Department for STC. “The exhibit and
competition motivates students to excel in their work and gives them a
goal to look forward to. We have some tremendously talented students who
are producing very professional work and we hope that the public takes
the time to come out and see their masterpieces.”
In additional to the exhibition, each piece will be judged for an
overall department art competition. Pieces will be divided into one of
two categories, “two dimensional and “three dimensional” works. Two
dimensional submissions include paintings, drawings, prints, digital
art, and photography. Three dimensional works include sculpture,
ceramics, design and jewelry. Awards will be given to the top three
works in each category, as well as a “Best in Show” award for the best
overall entry. The competition will be judged by local artist and
business owner Kirk Clark.
The exhibition is currently being shown at the college’s Pecan Campus
Art Gallery in Building B, Room 103. A reception and awards ceremony
will be held on April 12, 2007 from 7 – 9 p.m. and will be open to the
public.

commentary.

April is National Poetry Month and we invite the public to celebrate it
with us on Thursday, April 19, 7:00 PM at the Palm View Branch Library.
This year’s featured poet is the eclectic Daniel García Ordaz, The Poet
Mariachi. He will be reading from his most recent publication, You Know
What I'm Sayin'? (Second Edition), which is a celebration of the common
experience of language and culture, transfiguring time and place and
juxtaposing the politics of urban hip-hop America with the sociology of
rural deep South Texas, a retelling of ancient history sung by a
contemporary voice.
Through the colorful and literary use of language, this poet speaks
about the human experience through lyrics ranging from the humorous to
the serious, from the academic to the silly, giving readers a
familiarity with the sensual language around them and, for some, a
sudden urge to run out and find some great Mexican food!
At 8:00 PM, following El Poet Mariachi’s performance, will be our first
ever Open Mic Night featuring the writers of our Spring ’07 RGV Teen
Zine. All teens are encouraged to bring one poem to share with the
audience!
Light refreshment will be served, with cake and pan dulce provided to us
by El Fenix Bakery.
Books will be available for sale. Come get your book autographed!

Auditions for the first play of the 2007 Pan American Summer Stock
Theatre season are scheduled for April 23-24. Arcadia, by Tom Stoppard,
will have try outs at 7 PM in the Studio Theatre, CAS 107, next door to
the Albert L. Jeffers Theatre where the play will perform in mid June.
According to Box Office Supervisor Elva Galvan, the play will be cast
early so that costume fittings for the period drama-comedy can be done
during the final exam period. After finals, the rehearsals will go into
full swing.
Chelse Benham, a candidate for the MA in Theatre degree, will direct the
production as one of her thesis requirements. She will be supervised by
retiring Professor Marian Monta, who is her thesis advisor.
The play, which requires eight men of various ages and four women
ranging in age from 13 on up, takes place in an English country estate
and shifts back and forth between two time periods.
Perusal copies of the script are available at the Box Office, and most
local libraries should have a copy. Auditioners are urged to read the
script before they come to auditions. They are also asked to bring a
head shot and resume if they have them.
"People can just show up at 7 PM and sign up for an audition slot or
they can call the Box Office, 381-3581, to make an appointment. Anyone
who can't come during the two nights of tryouts is asked to call and
request a separate audition time," Galvan explained.

The Brownsville Heritage Complex in historic downtown Brownsville
invites the public to view the exhibit Ladrillos Y Mezcla (Bricks &
Mortar): The History of Brick and its Contribution to the Architecture
of the Lower Rio Grande Corridor.
The exhibit will be on display in the Aiken Education Center inside the
Brownsville Heritage Museum from April 26 to June 8, 2007 during regular
museum hours. Cost to view the exhibit is included in the price of
admission.
Inspired by the research and presentation of the history of brick in the
Rio Grande Valley by local businessman, artist, historian and architect
Manuel Hinojosa, this exhibit explores the history of bricks and
architecture of the lower Rio Grande Valley corridor through historic
photographs, artifacts, and drawings.
Ladrillos Y Mezcla (Bricks & Mortar): The History of Brick and its
Contribution to the Architecture of the Lower Rio Grande Corridor ,
produced by the Museums of Port Isabel (MoPI), was first displayed at
the Treasures of the Gulf Museum in Port Isabel last fall and will
travel to other venues thereafter.
The origin of brick making in the lower Rio Grande River borderlands
evolved from the Mesoamerican and Spanish Colonial elements of centuries
of adobe brick making. Shortages of rock building materials that were
abundant in the early colonization of Nuevo Santander were a major
factor in the introduction of a clay-fired brick to the newly formed
town site of Matamoros, Mexico.
As a result of the shortage, an eclectic architecture was created when
local brick masons incorporated Spanish, New Orleans and later classical
elements into building details on both sides of the Rio Grande River.
The handmade brick industry continued to manifest during the 1900s, when
the new economy was fueled by the creation of new cities by the
Anglo-American migrations to the Rio Grande Valley.

After providing the world with 50 years of arts and entertainment, the
American Wind Symphony Orchestra’s showboat is making its farewell
voyage and will perform April 28 at Port Isabel’s Southpoint Marina.
The public is invited to the 7:30 p.m. Saturday performance as the
vessel’s retractable acoustic shell rises on hydraulic lifts over a
75-foot wide stage providing an unforgettable musical evening.
The El Paseo Arts Foundation is coordinating the effort to bring the
Point Counterpoint II, the symphony’s vessel, to the Lower Laguna Madre
area. The foundation is working in partnership with other local
organizations.
The Point Counterpoint II was designed by architect Louis Kahn for the
Statue of Liberty centennial in 1986. It is the orchestra’s third ship
and the first to be self-propelled. The boat is 195 feet long, 38 feet
wide and cruises at nine knots. It is a floating art center with a
gallery and small theatre.
The musicians are young professionals recruited through auditions around
the world. While the boat is in the community, the musicians lodge in
the homes of local families with student musicians.
Over the years, the orchestra has traveled to cities around the world,
has commissioned many original compositions by eminent composers and
commissioned more than 400 works of art. The theme for the farewell
cruise will be “Journey of the Americas,” and the focus will be on music
and art from North America, South America and Central America. The music
and art will well represent the border community’s combined cultures.
The Lower Laguna Madre area will also be recognized as an art community
throughout the tour. As a host community, the local arts groups will be
invited to select a work of art by a local artist to be included in the
ship’s gallery.
For more information about the performance, sponsorship opportunities
and tour activities, call Melissa Zamora at (956) 761-3005.

The Brownsville Heritage Complex in historic downtown Brownsville
invites the public to Hecho en Tejas Literary Event: Down by the Border,
with writers featured in the latest volume of the book series, “Hecho en
Tejas: An Anthology of Texas Mexican Literature.” The event is free to
the public and begins at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2007.
Discussions and readings by writers including Dagoberto Gilb, Macarena
Hernandez, Christine Granados, Roberto Ontiveros, Tony Diaz and Emmy
Perez will explore the narratives of Texas Mexican history and culture
during the event.
Award-winning author, Dagoberto Gilb, edited the edition that creates a
mosaic portrait of Mexican American literature in Texas. Among the range
of authors represented, from the sixteenth century to the present,
“Hecho en Tejas” showcases young Tejano authors of the future, including
those featured during the literary event at the Brownsville Heritage
Complex.
“What I have tried to do,” Gilb says in the introduction, “is make Hecho
en Tejas a strong, good read. Not simply as an anthology, a collection
of different writers and styles, but as a book with chapters, so that
all the voices might form one story, from one family’s history…as the
book puzzles forward, each piece connecting land to history, sorrow to
joy, to what is Mexican, to what is American, what is assimilated, what
cannot be.”

The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College Arts
and Entertainment Series invites the public to the its 2007 season
performances.
Rita Moreno is the only female performer to have won all four of the
most prestigious show business awards: the Oscar, the Emmy, the Tony,
and the Grammy. She has, in fact been listed in the Guinness Book of
World Records for this achievement. She earned the Oscar for her
performance as Anita in the 1962 motion picture, West Side Story, the
two Emmys for her 1977 appearance on The Muppet Show, and for a dramatic
guest appearance on The Rockford Files in 1978. She won the Tony for her
1975 triumph on Broadway as Googie Gomez in The Ritz, the Grammy for her
1972 performance on The Electric Company Album for children.
It may be said that Rita Moreno, who has portrayed an Irish teacher, an
Italian widow, a reformed prostitute, a lady evangelist, an English
lady, and a southern belle, has broken the rigid role of Latino
stereotyping.
